KARACHI: Researchers, civil society representatives, government officials and parliamentarians agree that Pakistan is witnessing an unprecedented solarisation of its energy sector, with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels of around 33 gigawatts capacity already installed across the country.
The views were shared at an event organised by the Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development (PRIED), an independent think tank, to launch a study titled ‘Shouting from the Rooftops: Mapping Pakistan’s Solar Power Revolution’. The study is a joint initiative of PRIED and Transition Zero, an energy-transition think tank based in London.
Speakers and panellists at the launch highlighted various aspects of the study, describing it as an important knowledge product for understanding the scale of solar PV installations across regions, social groups, and economic sectors in Pakistan. They noted that the country’s off-grid solarisation has become an unstoppable phenomenon, though it must be channelled effectively to enhance the sustainability, affordability and accessibility of electricity nationwide.
